EU Commissioner Marta Kos Meets with Serbian Civil Society Representatives
The Coordinator of the National Convention on the European Union, Bojana Selaković, participated in a meeting with the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos. The meeting was organized as part of a visit by Serbian civil society representatives to Brussels at the invitation of Amnesty International’s office.
This was Commissioner Kos’s first meeting with Serbian civil society representatives since taking office in December last year.
The discussion focused on the current situation in Serbia, its impact on the EU integration process, and the government’s approach to civil society.
Commissioner Kos emphasized the importance of the rule of law and an effective fight against corruption for Serbia’s progress on the European path, highlighting the crucial role of civil society in this process.
“A strong civil society is essential for a healthy democracy because it safeguards rights and values.” Kos wrote in a post on the social media platform X after the meeting.
During the discussion, NCEU Coordinator Bojana Selaković explained why the NKEU recently decided to suspend communication with political actors responsible for the current state of Serbia’s EU accession process. She also highlighted the ongoing smear campaign and attempts to discredit civil society by tabloids and other actors close to the government.
“Commissioner Kos showed a high level of understanding of the challenges faced by civil society organizations engaged in the EU integration process and expressed her willingness to maintain regular and intensive communication in the future.” Selaković stated.
